Community Rugby

Rugby Day at St Nicolas School

On 19 October Cranleigh Rugby Footbal Club in conjunction with its newly appointed Community Rugby Coach Stephen Jones delivered a whole day of TAG rugby coaching to about 200 children aged between 6 & 10, most of whom had never even held a rugby ball before, let alone played the game.

The day was splendidly organised by Cranleigh RFC's Schools Liason Officer Linda Wallis in conjunction with Mini Vice Chairman Malcolm Terson & Stephen Jones, with a fantastic amount of assistance from all the staff at the school. This genuine community based partnership plus the enthusiasm of all the children who took part made the day a massive success.

The other vital ingredient was the coaches. Special mention must go to Stephen who soldiered bravely on despite a broken wrist sustain the previous weekend & Gemma Frisby, who coaches the girls teams at Cranleigh RFC & stepped into the breach at the 11th hour to ensure that the day could still go ahead.

Also on the coaching team were a number of volunteers who included Richard Brown, Luke Margetts, Toby Eves & Malcolm Terson who all took time off work to help.

This team were ably assisted by 5 of the Cranleigh U16s team who are currently doing their Community Leaders Awards plus one other from the U14s.

The St Nicolas teaching staff & class room assistants ironed out any little problems to ensure that everyone thoughly enjoyed the day. Cranleigh RFC hope to repeat this successful event in other local schools in the near future.

If you are interested in joining or have any questions about Cranleigh RFC please contact Toby Eves, Chairman, Mini & Youth Section on 07710 862605 or email toby-eves@private-portfolio.co.uk

Community Rugby Coach

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Jones as our first Community Rugby Coach (CRC). Stephen has been jointly employed by the Waverley Cluster of rugby clubs & is being funded jointly by these clubs & the Surrey Constituent Body Rugby Development Partnership (CBRDP).

Rugby Development Partnerships (RDPs) bring together all those involved in the provision & delivery of rugby for those aged 7 - 24 years within a Constituent Body (CB). Managed via sub-committees & led by an Executive Committee, Surrey CBRDP overseas rugby in 163 member schools (plus many more "emerging" schools), 34 clubs with youth sections & member Institutes of Further & Higher Education.

It is these "emerging schools" where Stephen as the new CRC will be concentrating his efforts in delivering quality coaching to children in schools for many of whom this will be their first introduction to the great game of rugby. He will be assisted by two volunteer Schools Liaison Officers from Cranleigh RFC, Linda Wallis who will concentrate on the Secondary schools within the area & Tony Boyle who will ensure delivery in the Primary & Junior schools.

In addition Cranleigh RFC will supply their own qualified coaches to assist Stephen & the PE/games teachers at each school.

Coordinating the coaches for Cranleigh will be the responsibility of Ruth Elliott, the club's Coaching Coordinator. It is her job to ensure that all coaches are both qualified & Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked via the Rugby Football Union (RFU) & the Police, in conjunction with Cranleigh Child Welfare Officer (CWO) Shelia Gibson. In this role Ruth books many volunteers onto regular coaching course facilitated by Surrey.

Toby Eves is the Coaching Liaison Officer (CLO) & his job is to try to ensure that this is all delivered as efficiently as possible in conjunction with the demands of the other local clubs that employ Stephen & share his coaching time. Toby thus has to liaise with the other clubs CLOs within the Waverley Cluster & with the Regional Development Officers (RDOs) at the Surrey CBRDP.

For more details please contact Toby Eves on 07710 862605 or email: toby-eves@private-portfolio.co.uk
